English bulldogs originated in the British Isles and are thought to have descended from the Asiatic mastiffs. English bulldogs were bred for their aggressiveness so that they could fearlessly attack full-grown bulls in the arena. Due to the English bulldog's size, they were able to attack bulls from the bottom grabbing hold of their necks, which made it difficult for the bulls to fight back. However, bull baiting was banned in the 19th century, and today's bulldogs are much gentler. In fact, today's English bulldog's make excellent family pets and are even great with children.
