The spinoni Italiano was developed as a gundog in the Piedmont region of Italy. Its origins date back to the Renaissance era. The spinoni Italiano is a pointing breed that was used to track and retrieve the quarry of the hunt. During World War II, the breed was used to pursue and help capture German soldiers. The breed remains a popular hunting dog and beloved family companion in its native country. The American Kennel Club recognized the spinoni Italiano in 2000 as a member of the sporting group.

The Spinone Italiano is a large, athletic dog with square proportions and long heads with broad muzzles. Their ears are pendant and they have pronounced eyebrows, mustaches and bears. The coat needs to be stripped occasionally to remove dead hair.

The Spinone Italiano is an easy-going, friendly breed. Spinones are happy and enthusiastic. The Spinone has medium to high exercise needs outside and makes a great jogging partner. Although he can be kept in small yards and will be happy with short romps, this is not really an apartment dog. Spinones love children and make great playmates.
