Hamiltonstovares were developed during the 1800s in Sweden from English foxhounds and various German hounds. The dog is named after Count Adolph Hamilton, the breed's developer and founder of the Swedish Kennel Club. Count Hamilton developed the breed to achieve a skilled hunter that could track hare and fox across the forests and mountainous terrains of Sweden. The breed was first shown in its native homeland in 1921 under the original name of Swedish hound. The breed name was subsequently changed to Hamiltonstovare to honor the man responsible for its development. Hamiltonstovares are still used for hunting in Sweden, where the breed remains extremely popular.
