The Glen of Imaal terrier hails from Ireland. It is thought that the earliest ancestors of the breed were dogs brought to Ireland by settlers and local dogs of indiscriminate origin. Developed as a hunter, the Glen of Imaal terrier has retained its love of the chase. This dog has a level of tenacity that is truly amazing. Because of it, the dog was used in organized dog fighting rings. The dog was also used to run on a treadmill-type machine that powered the mechanisms of cooking spits. The American Kennel Club did not recognize the Glen of Imaal terrier until 1987. It is considered to be a rare dog today, but it is gaining popularity. Today's Glen of Imaal terrier is kept both as a family pet and a hunting companion.
