Clumber Spaniel

During the French Revolution, the Duc de Noailles of France spirited his spaniels away from the war torn nation to his British acquaintance, the Duke of Newcastle. They were given residence at the duke's Clumber Park estate, where the dogs earned their name of Clumber spaniel. The breed soon became popular in England, where aristocracy welcomed the dogs into their royal circles. The Clumber spaniel was exhibited in a British show ring in 1859. Clumber spaniels made their way to North America, courtesy of a British officer who was bound for Nova Scotia. The American Kennel Club recognized the Clumber spaniel in 1884 as a member of the sporting group, and the Clumber spaniel was among the first nine breeds recognized by this institution.

It needs regular brushing and occasional bathing because its long white coat tends to get dirty. It also tends to drool.
