You’ve probably heard of the Irish setter. This dog with beautiful, long, red locks is difficult to miss. Did you know that there are seven other breeds of Irish descent that are recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC)?
Irish Dog Breeds in the Spotlight for St. Patrick’s Day
St Patricks Day Dog Breeds
To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, let’s honor those breeds that hail from the Emerald Isle: the Glen of Imaal Terrier, the Irish Terrier, the Irish Water Spaniel, the Irish Wolfhound, the Kerry Blue Terrier, the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, and the Irish Red and White Setter.
Glen of Imaal Terrier
This working terrier isn’t very well known in the United States. The beautiful dog is courageous, active and intent when chasing game. The dog turns into a surprisingly docile companion when relaxing with its family. One of the newest breeds, the Glen of Imaal Terrier was first recognized by the AKC in 2004.
Irish Terrier
The Irish terrier was first recognized by the AKC in 1885. The ancestors of today’s Irish terriers were used to deliver messages between troops in World War I. These brave and loyal dogs are excellent companions that are incredibly committed to their owners. Because of its strong will, the Irish terrier may not be the right breed for inexperienced dog owners.
Irish Water Spaniel
The AKC recognized nine breeds at its inception in 1884. Among the original groups of breeds recognized was the Irish Water Spaniel. It is not unusual for people to confuse this breed with a standard poodle. Both breeds have a curly coat, but the Irish Water Spaniel has a smooth, long tail. The breed tends to be cautious with strangers but devoted to their family.

Irish Wolfhound
When you see one of these gentle giants, you won’t soon forget it. Male Irish Wolfhounds stand close to three feet tall at the withers and weigh 120 pounds. Females of the breed are nearly as large. These dogs are amazingly friendly and make terrific family pets. The only negative comment one can make about this breed it is that they rarely live past nine years of age.
Kerry Blue Terrier
The Kerry Blue is named after the county in Ireland from which it hails. This terrier is known for hunting small game, herding flocks and guarding homes. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1922 and has since been used for farm, police and protection work.
Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
The name of this breed perfectly describes its coat: soft. The silky, wavy coat of this Terrier is a beautiful brown color, reminiscent of wheat. Most members of this breed are friendly towards people, with a natural inclination to greet strangers.
Irish Red and White Setter
This breed is similar to the Irish setter. It is easily discerned from the Irish terrier due to the white in its coat. The ancestors of this dog were hunters, providing fur, feather and food for its owners. This breed makes an excellent dog for an active family.
