Although theoretically many dog breeds could be suitable for Search and Rescue Dog Training, there are some dogs which are more suitable than others due to their innate ability for stamina, endurance, drive, confidence, intelligence level and willingness to learn. Some dogs learn much quicker than others and are therefore easier to train. Breeds which are best suited for Search and Rescue Dog Training include the German Shepherd and Labrador Retriever. These two breeds tend to have a strong willingness to learn, extreme focus and a stable temperament.

Search and Rescue Training

Search and Rescue dogs are often used for a variety of situations. These situations include locating a cadaver or someone who is lost due to disaster or simply being lost. The training for these situations often involves the rescue essentially being a “ playful ” activity. The dog believes he is playing a game and the end result of completing the task is extremely rewarding to the dog.

Initial training often involves playing a game similar to hide n’ seek. The hide n’ seek game often involves their favorite toy. As the puppy learns, the training becomes more extensive.
