Spontaneous Abortions

Spontaneous Abortions

The cat or dog experiences spontaneous, premature expulsion of a nonviable embryo or fetus from the uterus. Also called Miscarriage. Spontaneous abortions in pets, sometimes referred to as miscarriages, can occur in both dogs and cats of any breed or age. While there are many health issues that can cause spontaneous abortions in dogs and cats, the most common are accidents, injuries, malnutrition and the B canis bacteria. Other things that can cause spontaneous abortions in pets include poisoning, mycotic fungus, hormonal imbalances and neospora caninum.

How to Recognize

If your pet is pregnant and you see abnormal vaginal bleeding, your pet may have miscarried.

Causes of Spontaneous Abortions

A hormonal imbalance, the bacteria B. canis, mycosis fungal infection, and a parasite called Neospora Caninum are common causes of miscarriage.

Diagnosis

A blood test will be able to confirm or deny a miscarriage and should be able to detect the cause.

Treatment for Spontaneous Abortions

Your pet should be taken to the veterinarian and closely monitored following a miscarriage.

Pet Insurance

When adding a dog or cat to your family you want to make sure your pet is happy, healthy and protected. During its lifetime your pet is exposed to many illnesses and diseases and some breeds are affected by a congenital disease which is a condition existing at birth. At these moments when your pet is ill or maybe needs surgery, you want to be protected for the unexpected and high veterinarian costs.
