The pet is not feeling fit and might be ill, this poor body condition in pets is very common today. This condition is characterized by obesity, thinness and/or a lack of muscle tone. The most common causes of poor body condition in dogs and cats are lack of nutrition/poor nutrition, overfeeding and lack of proper exercise. However, there are other issues that can result in poor body condition, and they are hypo/hyperthyroidism, pancreatic insufficiency and internal parasites.

How to Recognize

Poor body condition includes both obesity and emaciation. Your pet may have a lot of extra fat tissue or be very thin and lack muscle tone. Your pet may also appear lethargic and be unable or unwilling to exercise.

Causes of Poor Body Condition

Obesity can be caused by hypothyroidism, pancreatic cancer, and hyperadrenocorticism. Emaciation can be caused by hyperthyroidism or parasites.

Diagnosis

Poor body condition is most commonly caused by over or undereating, poor exercise, or behavioral problems. However, poor body condition can also be caused by medical issues, so you should consult your veterinarian.

Some behavioral problems can be solved with training, care, proper exercise, and a nutritional diet. Treatments for medical issues vary.
