Nose Bleeds

Nose Bleeds

A bloody discharge comes from the nose of a dog or cat. Nose bleeds in pets, medically known as epitaxis, is characterized by bleeding from the nasal cavities. In most cases, nose bleeds in dogs and cats are caused by upper respiratory tract infections, trauma or hemophilia. However, other conditions that can cause nose bleeds in cats and dogs include ingestion of rat poisoning, liver failure, feline leukemia virus, von Willebrand's disease and hemangiosarcoma.

How to Recognize

Bleeding from your pet's nose may consist of a lot of blood or a slight dripping.

Causes of Nose Bleeds

An infection or tumor in the nose may be the cause of nosebleeds. Nose bleeds in dogs are also highly correlated with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, a tick-borne bacterial disease.

Diagnosis

While nosebleeds are relatively common in people, they are usually a side effect of an underlying cause in cats and dogs.

Treatment for Nose Bleeds

In order to stop a pet's nosebleed, place an absorbent material by their nose. Press a cold compress at the top of your pet's snout. Do not put anything in their nose or tilt their head back. Contact your veterinarian if your pet has a nose bleed.

Pet Insurance

When adding a dog or cat to your family you want to make sure your pet is happy, healthy and protected. During its lifetime your pet is exposed to many illnesses and diseases and some breeds are affected by a congenital disease which is a condition existing at birth. At these moments when your pet is ill or maybe needs surgery, you want to be protected for the unexpected and high veterinarian costs.
