Increased thirst, pet is drinking much more than usual. Excessive drinking is often accompanied by excessive urinating. Excessive thirst can be a sign of kidney failure, which can be dangerous and needs to be treated as soon as possible. It is advised to consult a veterinarian to determine the cause of the excessive thirst and to choose the treatment.
How to Recognize
A dog typically needs to drink one ounce of water for every pound he/she weighs. Though you should expect your dog to drink more on hot days and if he/she is extremely active, excessive thirst in your pet can be a sign of an underlying health issue.
Causes of Excessive Thirst
Your pet may be excessively thirsty due to dehydration. Dehydration in pets usually occurs in high temperatures, if your pet is extremely active, and/or maintains a very dry diet. Excessive thirst can also be a symptom of diseases such as kidney failure, diabetes, cancer, or liver disease.
Treatment for Excessive Thirst
If your pet appears to be dehydrated, provide your pet with cool water immediately. If you are worried your pet drinks too much or too little water, seek advice from your veterinarian.
Pet Insurance
When adding a dog or cat to your family you want to make sure your pet is happy, healthy and protected. During its lifetime your pet is exposed to many illnesses and diseases and some breeds are affected by a congenital disease which is a condition existing at birth. At these moments when your pet is ill or maybe needs surgery, you want to be protected for the unexpected and high veterinarian costs.
