The Russian Sheepdog — better known as the South Russian Ovtcharka, South Russian Shepherd Dog, or SRO — is a large long-haired sheepdog. It is named for its origins in the former U.S.S.R. The Russian Sheepdog is usually associate with the Caucasian Ovcharka and the Central Asian Ovcharka, dog breeds that originate from the same area. No one knows precisely how the Russian Sheepdog was developed. Some people believe it is a breed native to Russia (and the Ukraine). Others believe it traces its ancestry to sheepdogs that possibly came from other parts of Europe, or even wolves. The earliest period to which anyone can trace the Russian sheepdog is the 18th century, with its habitat being the Crimea region between the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. The Russian Sheepdog was valued for its ability to function as a guard dog or herding dog with little to no supervision.
