Schnauzer Mix

Schnauzer Mix

If you want a small dog that will become a loyal companion, you should consider a Schnauzer mix. This is not a purebred dog, so you do need to research the temperament of the dog the Schnauzer is mixed with to learn about them. They are typically considered part of the terrier family, which means they usually have high energy. This is a German bred dog that was used for sniffing out small game. Today the Schnauzer is usually bred as a companion dog and loving companion for families.

The Schnauzer Mix is a small dog usually averaging 12 pounds and around 14 inches in height.

Personality

This is an intelligent, loving dog that makes for a great companion. If you want an energetic and playful dog, this is a great breed. They are very affectionate and devoted to their family. They are great with children and very devoted around them. They make for a wonderful family pet, and can be great in small apartments. They need to have training when they are young to learn how to obey their masters. If they think they are smarter than their owners, they will not listen or mind well. It is important to be firm with them, yet calm in the way you deliver commands. They tend to have a low, carried-out howl versus a yappy bark. They do a great job tracking vermin in the yard and they are a good watchdog as they will alert owners to anything suspicious. If you do not train them properly they can end up with separation anxiety. This can cause them to destroy things in the home when the owners are away. If they end up with separation anxiety, kennel them when you are out so they do not get into trouble.

Appearance

The Schnauzer mix has a wiry coat that needs regular brushing and attention. You need to prevent matting by brushing it each day. Cut out any mats that appear in the fur. You need to clip the fur to an even length about twice a year. Trim the fur around their eyes and ears and around their belly. This will prevent urine from getting on their fur. If you want them to be a show dog, they need to be hand stripped and trimmed. They do not shed much, which makes them great for people with allergies.

Schnauzer Mix Common Health Conditions

Watching what they eat is important as they could develop a number of health problems if they eat too much or eat foods that are not good for them. If they have been fed a poor diet for several years, it could reduce their lifespan.
