They are characterized physically by their shaggy fur, short legs, and floppy ears, and are colored black, brown, white, salt and pepper, or gray.

Schnau-Tzus are extremely intelligent and trainable, and are very friendly toward people and other dogs, which makes them ideal as household pets, even around younger children.
