The word Bolonka means a lapdog while Tsvetnaya means colored. Therefore, Tsvetnaya Bolonka is a colored lapdog. Under the Russian communist authority, keeping dogs for companionship was unheard of. It had to be a working dog of some sorts. The original owners of Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka breed of dogs were part of Napoleon's army. They migrated to Russia with them. When the army later retreated from Russia, a few of these dogs were left behind. These are the ancestors of the present day breed of the Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka. The dog was later discovered after the fall of communism.

Back in the 18th century, French King Louis the IV presented this dog as a gift to the Russian noble family. During the Soviet era, there was a blanket ban on importation of dogs to Russia. Some people mistakenly call the dog Bolognese. The breed has been recognized by the American Rare Breed Association as a rare breed. This breed of dogs has a number of nicknames. Some people call them Russian Lapdogs while others refer to them as Russian Colored Bichons. German dog breeders refer to them as Bolonka Zwetna or Deutscher Bolonka. Czechs call them Barevny Bolonsky Psik. Nonetheless, Bolonka is the standard name worldwide.
