The toy mi-ki is believed to have originated in the United States during the 1980s. Micki Mackin, a breeder in Wisconsin, started the breed's development. Several breeds were used to develop the mi-ki, including the Japanese chin, the Maltese and the papillon. The States Kennel Club recognized the mi-ki in 1995, and the breed is still being developed for ultimate recognition in other kennel club circuits.

The Mi Ki is a small dog with a small, compact body. They have small, domed heads with short, broad muzzles and medium-sized noses. The Mi Ki's ears are very mobile and can be carried erect or dropped. It has a long, profuse double coat that has to be groomed regularly.

Mi Ki Build Information

The tiny mi-ki stands seven to nine inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between four and eight pounds. The coat comes in either smooth or long lengths. Unlike the smooth coated mi-ki, the longhaired mi-ki exhibits a moustache and beard. The longer coat is straight and silky with feathering on the tail, ears and legs. The smooth coat has shorter fringing on the tail, ears and legs. The coat may be of any color. The tail is carried high, and the ears may be either naturally erect or dropped downward. Appearance

The mi-ki sheds very little. Its coat needs to be combed through weekly to remove the dead hair in order to prevent matting. Like other toy breeds, the mi-ki is especially prone to periodontal disease. Minimize this risk and tartar accumulation by brushing the teeth daily. Keeping the ears clean and dry will reduce the risk for developing ear infections.
