Mcnab

The McNab is a herding breed of dog that was developed in the United States where it was mainly used to herd sheep in Mendocino County, California. These dogs are known by a variety of names including McNabs, McNab Shepherds, McNab Border Collies, McNab Herding Dogs, McNab Sheedogs and McNab Cattle Dogs. In 1866, a man by the name of Alexander McNab traveled to Mendocino County, California from his home in Scotland. He bought a large ranch in California, which he named after himself. Since McNab did not like the local herding dogs, he traveled back to Scotland and brought back two black and white Scotch Collies. He then crossed his Scotch Collies with various Spanish-bred Collies that were brought to the states by Basque sheep herders from Northern Spain. The resulting dogs were excellent cattle dogs. Later, McNab introduced different colors into his breeding program by traveling back to Scotland and bringing back red and white Fox Collies.

McNabs are medium to large-sized dogs that can range in size from 25 to 70 pounds. They have short to medium-length hair that can come in several colors including black and white, red and white, black, red, and tri-colored. Some of these dogs are born with long tails while others are born with natural bobbed tails. Their ears are somewhat triangular and can be either fully erect or erect with the tips flopping forward. They typically have almond-colored eyes set within a wedge-shaped head. This is a somewhat square-shaped dog with cat-like feet, which gives it the agility necessary for maneuvering among cattle.

Appearance

The McNab has a thick double-coat that sheds two or three times per year. As such, you will need to brush your McNab often, especially during shedding seasons. Bathing is usually only necessary when your pet becomes overly dirty. However, you will need to check its ears regularly for excessive wax accumulation. Additionally, you can clip the tip of its nails with a pliers-type nail clipper when the tips become too long.

The majority of McNabs are very healthy dogs that can live for 15 years or longer. However, there are a few health issues that they can be susceptible to developing. Although the McNab is primarily a cattle dog, it can also herd other animals such as sheep, horses and llamas. McNabs are athletic-type dogs that require a lot of exercise. As such, they do not make good pets for people who live in apartments. Some McNabs were often used to hunt such game as rabbits and wild boar.
