Majorcan Bulldog

Majorcan Bulldogs are medium to large-sized dogs that originated in Spain where they were most often used as guard dogs. They are known by a multitude of different names including the Majorcan Bulldog, Perro de Presa Mallorquin, Ca de Bou, Mallorca Mastiff, Mallorquin Bulldog, Mallorquin Mastiff, Perro Dogo Mallorquin and the Majorca Mastiff. Since very early times, there has been trading in the Mediterranean region. While most trading involved consumer products such as food and tobacco, quite often it involved domesticated animals as well. Among these animals were various Mastiff-like dogs that quickly became popular as guard dogs for the harbors. During the 17th century, the British brought some of their own guard dogs to the Balearics and crossed them with the area's native Mastiffs. The resulting dogs were named Ca de Bou, which means Bull Dog. These dogs were mainly used for dog fighting and bull baiting when these sports were still widespread in Spain.

Majorcan Bulldogs were first added to the Spanish Stud Book in 1923 and were first exhibited in Barcelona in 1929. The breed was not recognized by the United Kennel Club until July of 2006. Due to their aggressive nature, Majorcan Bulldogs typically do not get along well with other dogs or household pets.
