Hungarian Greyhounds are medium-sized dogs that originated in Hungary where they were mainly used for hunting and long-distance racing. The Hungarian Greyhound has been around since the 10th century when they were developed by the Magyar people in Hungary to be excellent sighthounds. While many people think that Hungarian Greyhounds are descendants of Greyhounds, this is not so. They are actually relatives of various other scenthound breeds. All through history, Hungarian Greyhounds have been used mainly for tracking and retrieving such game as rabbits, foxes and deer. However, they were also commonly used for racing, lure coursing, as watch dogs and even family pets. Today, they continue to excel as hunting and coursing dogs; however, they are quite rare outside of Hungary.

Appearance
Due to its short hair, the Hungarian Greyhound is fairly easy to groom. You will only need to bathe your Hungarian Greyhound when it becomes overly dirty. However, you will want to make sure that you check its ears at least once a week for any excessive wax buildup. Additionally, if the nails become long, you can clip the tips of them using a pliers-type nail clipper designed for pets.

The earliest archeological evidence of Hungarian Greyhounds was found in the Carpathian Mountains along the eastern and northern borders of Hungary. Early Hungarian Greyhounds were expected to run between 19 to 31 miles per day during training. The following colors are considered disqualifying faults for Hungarian Greyhounds: blue, black and tan, and tri-colors. Hungarian Greyhounds are most known for their speed and elegant appearance. As long as you care for your Hungarian Greyhound properly, it can live as long as 12 to 15 years or longer.
