The Hanover Hound is a rather large dog that originated in Germany where it was used to track and hunt such game as deer and bears. They are known by a variety of different names including Hanover Hounds, Hanoverian Hounds, Hanoverian Scenthounds and Hannoverscher Schweisshunds. The Hanover Hound was named after its birth place, Hanover, Germany. They are descendants of ancient hunting hounds that were known as Liam Hounds. By crossing Liam Hounds with other scenthounds such as Heidebrackes and Bavarian Hounds, an excellent tracking hound was created. These dogs soon came to be known as Hanover Hounds. While Hanover Hounds were most commonly used to scent and track such large game as deer and bears, the dogs were also occasionally used as loyal companions and guard dogs. Today, the breed continues to be an excellent hunting dog. However, it is rarely seen outside of Germany.

Appearance
The short coat of the Hanover Hound requires minimal grooming other than bathing when necessary. However, the ears do require regular cleaning to prevent infections. When cleaning the ears, take extra care not to dig into the ear canal. Finally, if the nails need trimming, you can clip off the tips using a pliers-type nail clipper.
