French Hound

The French hound has a mixed ancestry. These breeds are the blue Gascony hound and the Saintongeois. The French hound also has a touch of foxhound blood coursing through its veins. The French tricolor hound can trace its ancestors to the Anglo-French tricolor hound and the French hound. Mixed breedings with the Billy, Poitevin, and perhaps the blue Gascony hound took place and produced a sturdier version of the French tricolor hound. A very rare version of the French hound, the French white and orange hound, was developed by crossing a French hound with a Billy.

The French hound is a larger breed of dog and the tallest acceptable height for a male is 28 inches white the height for a female is 26 inches. An adult hound will weigh approximately 66 pounds when it is at its ideal weight. The coat of the French hound is white and black. Grey, tan, and black flecks on the legs are acceptable. The skin of the hound is white under white fur and black under black fur. The powerful body of the hound is evident under its tight coat.

The French White and Black Hound, is a large, muscular hunting dog originating in France. They are lean with long legs, typical of hunting dogs, standing 25-28 inches in height. Their coats are white with a black mantle and occasional tan markings. Although originally purposed for hunting, the Francais Blanc et Noir is easy to handle, well-behaved and can make for a loyal and affectionate family pet.
