Dupuy Setter

Dupuy Setter

The Dupuy Setter is a sporting dog that was developed in France as a versatile hunting dog. This dog is known by a variety of different names including the Dupuy Setter, Braque Du Puy, Dupuy Pointer and the Braque Dupuy. These dogs are extremely rare even in their country of origin. It is thought that the Dupuy Setter has been in existence since the 1600s when it was more commonly known as the Braque Dupuy. They were likely created by crossing early scent hounds with African-type Sloughi Grey Hounds. However, this has not been proven. An official breed standard was written for the Dupuy Setter in 1963. Originally, there were many types of French Braque dogs used for hunting purposes in France, but there are only a few of these breeds left today. While the Dupuy Setter is one of these breeds that remains in existence, there are only a few hundred of them that can be found anywhere in the world.

Dupuy Setters are medium to large-sized dogs that can weigh between 49 and 62 pounds fully grown. They have short stiff hair that is white with brown, liver or orange spots and patches. These are lean dogs that have long legs, amber or brown-colored eyes, long floppy ears and a tail that can be docked or left long.

Personality

The Dupuy Setter is an active dog that is happiest when it is allowed to run and explore its surroundings. This is also a friendly dog that gets along well with children. Nevertheless, if you choose to add one of these dogs to your family, you will want to be sure to provide it with plenty of exercise and room to play. Dupuy Setters have excellent scenting skills; however, they are not good swimmers. They are known most for their speed and flexibility while hunting in bushy areas and low-lying marshlands. This is a very lively and enthusiastic breed that requires a lot of exercise and room to run and explore.
