The Cockapoo is a mix between the cocker spaniel and toy poodle. The breed is a hybrid, and it is one of the first designer dogs. The Cockapoo dates back to the 1960s. There is an attempt by breed aficionados to turn the Cockapoo into a true breed. That is to say that Cockapoo litters will be born to Cockapoo parents. There are two schools of thought when it comes to the Cockapoo. The Cockapoo Club of America, formed in 1999, strives to breed multigenerational Cockapoos to one another to create desired qualities in subsequent litters. The American Cockapoo Club, formed in 2004, breeds cocker spaniels and poodles, leaving Cockapoos out of the breeding program.
There are four different size categories within the Cockapoo breed. Teacup toys are less than six pounds and less than 10 inches tall. Toy Cockapoos are just under 12 pounds and stand 10 inches tall. Miniature Cockapoos weigh between 13 and 18 pounds and stand between 11 and 14 inches tall. Standard Cockapoos weigh more than 19 pounds and are at least 15 inches tall at the withers.
Personality
The Cockapoo is one of the friendliest breeds of dog available today. The breed is a happy one, loving its owners and rarely meeting a stranger. Because the Cockapoo is so attached to its family, it is not unusual for the breed to suffer from separation anxiety. The sweet dog is equally as happy running down the hiking trail as it is cuddling on the couch. Early and frequent socialization and exposure to new experiences is the key to bringing out the true personality of the breed.

Appearance
Unlike some other breeds, the Cockapoo has only a single layer of fur. While the hair coat should not be kinky, it can range from straight to curly. The Cockapoos' fur is beautiful and lush when left natural. Some owners choose to have their Cockapoo clipped. If you choose to do this, the hair should not be cut shorter than two inches in length. The heavy, floppy ears can cause ear issues in your Cockapoo. To help prevent this, keep the hair on the inside of the ears trimmed very short. This helps air reach the ear canal. Clean your Cockapoo's ears at least once a week, cut its toenails monthly, brush its teeth daily, and give it a bath when necessary.
