The chipom is a hybrid that resulted when a Chihuahua was crossed with a Pomeranian. A hybrid is essentially a breed of dog that is created by crossing two specific purebreds to produce a dog that has the favored qualities of both parent breeds. The chipom was created to exhibit the bold confidence and playfulness of the Pomeranian and the liveliness and affectionate demeanor of the Chihuahua.

The Chipom-PomChi is a cross between a Chihuahua and a Pomeranian. They appearance can vary from dog to dog, but generally PomChis take after their Chihuaha lineage when it comes to the ears which are triangular and erect. Their muzzles are usually short and pointy. Their bodies tend to resemble Pomeranians, most of them have a curled, feathered tail. Their coat may be double and profuse like Pomeranians, or more short and Chihuaha-like. The fluffier varieties need to be groomed several times a week. The toy-sized chipom stands five to nine inches tall at the shoulder and weighs 5 to 12 pounds. The coat may be single or double layered. The coat appears soft and glossy, forming a ruff around the neck and a fluffy tail. The coat may be any solid color or pattern, and the coat length will depend on whether the Chihuahua or the Pomeranian coat played the dominant role. The pointed ears stand erect, and the long tail is carried upward, resting or curling over the back.

Chipoms are energetic, but their exercise requirements can be met with plenty of indoor playtime and daily walks when the weather is favorable. These dogs are ideal for apartment living, and they are happy to fetch, chase and play with their toys indoors until they tucker themselves out. They are sweet and affectionate. They adore their families and are excellent family pets, but their size renders them too delicate for playing with very young children. Appearance

Chipoms need to be brushed. How often they need to be brushed will depend on the length of the coat. Those with shorter coats should be brushed twice each week to remove dead hairs and prevent matting, and those with longer coats will need to be brushed more frequently to keep tangles to a minimum. It will be important to brush the chipom's teeth daily in order to prevent periodontal disease and maintain optimal overall health.

Chipoms have lengthy average lifespans of 12 to 18 years. They are prone to any of the health conditions that affect Chihuahuas and Pomeranians, including periodontal disease, patellar luxation, epilepsy, open fontanel, hypoglycemia, tracheal collapse, epilepsy and such eye conditions as entropion, cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy.
