Biewer Terrier

The Biewer terrier is sometimes still referred to as the Biewer Yorkshire terrier a la Pom Pon, its original name. Other nicknames include Biewer, Biewer a la Pom Pon and Biewer Yorkie. In 1984, two champion Yorkshire terriers belonging to Gertrud and Werner Biewer produced a piebald puppy. The Biewers felt that this puppy was unusual and attractive enough to warrant breeding more dogs with this appearance. They called the results of this breeding program Biewer Yorkshire terriers a la Pom Pon. In 1989, the ACH, a German club for dog lovers, recognized the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier a la Pom Pon as a distinct breed. After partnering with veterinary geneticists to determine that the Biewer terrier and the Yorkshire terrier were indeed two separate breeds, an American terrier club changed the name of the breed to the Biewer terrier.

Its body is compact and powerful, and it has muscular legs. It has a round head with a short muzzle and tiny, upright ears. Breed standards require the hair on the dog's chest, legs and stomach to be pure white. The dog's back is white with patches of blue or black. The head is white, blue or black and gold or tan. The dog has a black nose, and its eyes have dark rims.

Personality

These little dogs are fearless, energetic, vocal and intelligent. They are loving companions, but they need structure. If not properly trained, these dogs can become overbearing. They also tend to become suspicious of strangers and can be aggressive toward smaller animals if not appropriately socialized.

Appearance

Biewer terriers have long hair that continually grows and will painfully tangle and mat if not cared for properly. If their coats are kept long, they need frequent grooming and daily brushing. They also need weekly shampooing and frequent clips. Because of the time required to manage a dog with a long coat, many owners of dogs not intended for the show ring keep their dogs' coats clipped short.
