Armant dogs were developed in Egypt primarily as working dogs on farms. It is thought that the breed has been around since about 1900. It was named after the village of Armant where many of the dogs could be found at that time. While it is not clear how the dogs were developed, many people believe that they are descendants of ancient Egyptian dogs. On the other hand, some people believe that Armants are descendants of dogs that were brought to Egypt from Europe two centuries ago. This belief mainly comes from the fact that the Armant is very similar in appearance to such French breeds as the Briard and Bearded Collie. Other breeds that may have contributed to the Armant's development include the Newfoundland, Harrier and the Roman Cattle Driving Dog.
Armant dogs can weigh anywhere between 50 and 65 pounds fully grown. They have long, shaggy hair that can come in a variety of colors including gray, black and tan, black, and brown.
