The American Bully was created in the early 1990s through the line breeding of specific American Pit Bull Terrier lines. Breeders chose Greyline and Razors Edge bloodlines due to their unique characteristics. They wanted a dog with a larger head and shorter, yet broader, body. The breed quickly became popular in the U.S. and was recognized in 2004 with the creation of the American Bully Kennel Club, which maintains the standard for the breed. As of July 2013, the American Bully also gained recognition with the United Kennel Club as a distinct dog breed.

Appearance

Generally, the American Bully is a hardy dog that does not develop any serious health conditions. Nevertheless, there have been a few dogs that have developed hip dysplasia. Most all American Bullies are related in some way to a dog known as Juan Gotty of Blue Star Kennels in California. After Juan Gotty died at the age of 15, he continued to produce offspring through artificial insemination. Healthy American Bullies can live as long as 12 years or even longer.
