The American Allaunt, also known simply as the Allaunt, is a large Mastiff-like dog that is most known for its broad head and muscular body. This is an extremely rare breed, and it is thought that there are only about 120 of them living anywhere in the world at the present time. Unfortunately, there is very little known about this breed’s origins. However, it is known that it was once used for hunting and guarding purposes. It was also thought that the breed had become extinct. Nevertheless, the breed is, indeed, still in existence and is now used for various purposes including protection, hunting and weight-pulling.

Appearance
American Allaunts do not shed excessively and require little grooming aside from an occasional brushing and perhaps a monthly bath. You will also want to check your Allaunt’s nails regularly and trim them with a heavy-duty pliers-type nail clipper when necessary.

Since there are not many American Allaunts in existence, it is not clear as to what types of health issues may be common to the breed.
