The Norwich Terrier was first found in East Anglia in England. In fact, the Norfolk and Norwich Terriers were actually the same breed at that time but with varying ear types. In 1964, the two breeds were separated and became two distinct breeds shortly thereafter. The Norwich has small perky ears while the Norfolk has ears that are dropped. Norwich Terriers were used out on the farms to chase foxes that had escaped during hunts. This was due to their small size and agile qualities.
Featuring a strong, sturdy body, the Norwich Terrier has a rounded, wide head with plenty of spacing between both ears. Its muzzle is wedge shaped and it has medium ears and small dark eyes. It has a medium size tail with a straight coat of no more than a couple inches. Colorings include red, beige, tan or black or combinations thereof.
Personality
These dogs are courageous, affectionate and very active. As such, they’re easy to train and they follow rules well. They don’t appear nervous and they rarely challenge their owners. They do what they’re told without a fight. They get along with other dogs, adults and children. They’ll chase after anything thrown their way, such as toys, and they need an outlet for running on a regular basis. They will bark or dig if bored and left alone. The Norwich Terrier can be hard to house break. While it is good with small children and cats and dogs, it shouldn’t be left along with hamsters, guinea pigs and the like.

Breed Talents and Facts
These dogs do well in apartments because they don’t need a lot of outdoor space. They are active critters but as long as they have a large indoor space, they’ll do just fine. Bred to work, these dogs do need regular walks outside, although owners should teach them to heel behind the person walking them. They should also be taught to enter doorways after their human leaders. The Norwich Terrier is also known as Cantab, Jones or Trumpington Terrier. Norwich Terriers have a life expectancy of between 12 and 15 years.
