Tawny Brittany Griffon

This breed was used for its hunting abilities to rein in the threat of wolves on sheep flocks. Originating in the Middle ages, Tawny Brittany Griffons were eventually crossed with other hunting breeds and used to track down fox and boar.

Characterized by a rough wheat or red colored coat, this breed is easy to maintain. They grow to a height of between 19 and 22 inches, weighing between 40 and 48 pounds. This breed features hazel eyes, strong jaws, sloped shoulders, muscular neck, strong boned legs and high set tail. They look very much like Bassets with their long bodies and short legs. Their coats are harsh and extremely dense, great for all-weather protection.

Personality

Dignified and aloof yet trustworthy, the Tawny Brittany Griffon is a good-natured dog and gets along with other pets as well as humans. These dogs are affectionate and do well with children. While they need to be socialized early on like all other dogs, they make great house pets. Tawny Brittany Griffons are smart, brave and very active, and they will do just about anything to protect their owners. These cheerful dogs have a mind of their own, so be careful when letting them off the leash. Although they are not guard dogs, they will alert their owners to strangers who approach the home. They do not enjoy being confined for long periods. To lead a full, happy life, they need to be allowed to romp and play outside. This dog is courageous and has a strong sense of smell. Firm discipline is needed at the start to establish yourself as the leader of the pack; otherwise, your dog could display behavioral problems and think he’s the boss.
