Smaland Hound

First recognized in 1921 by the Swedish Kennel Club, the Smaland Hound has its roots in 16th century Sweden. It’s the oldest scent hound that is native to that country. This breed is a rare one and is the smallest of all the dog breeds originating from Sweden, featuring black and tan markings. It was originally bred as a hunting dog ideal for tracking down foxes and hares.

With a square body and well-developed chest, the Smaland Hound has a short yet strong, arched back and tucked stomach. Punctuated by a compact yet robust body, this stump-tailed dog has medium coarse, straight hair. Overall weight for both males and females is between 33 and 40 pounds.

Personality

The free-spirited personality of this breed is further punctuated by its high energy, agility, calm and kind demeanor, and loyal spirit. This type of dog is very good with children as well as other cats and dogs. The medium coat tends to be a bit longer underneath the tail and on the thighs. Males grow to about between 18 and 26 inches tall and females grow to between 15 and 25 inches tall. This protective dog is also extremely intelligent but can be protective of their homes and masters. They are active so therefore need a backyard to run about in. This dog is a wonderful companion to any owner and is fiercely loyal. As such, it will do anything to protect its owner. It loves to form bonds of friendship and is obedient almost to a fault. It is a guard dog by nature and as such will bark at anything unfamiliar.
