The Shetland Sheepdog’s origins can be traced to Shetland Islands. These are rocky and windswept isles located in Scotland. Sheep reared on these islands were wild and required sheepdogs that could cope with this behavior. The breed was initially thought to be a crossbreed of Greenland and Icelandic dogs owned by fishermen and the Collie. Later on, it was realized that the breed was on the verge of disappearing. Some dog owners turned to crossing Shelties with breeds such as Scottish Terriers, Papillions and Pomeranians. These were later sold to rich merchants. While this was taking place, another group of breeders made efforts to retain the original breed. Their attempts led to the first breed originally known as Shetland Collies. The name Shetland Sheepdog was later adopted.
