Black Forest Hound

Black Forest Hound

The Black Forest hound is also known as the Slovensky Kopov or the Slovakian hound. This small scent hound has been used by the people of Eastern Europe for centuries to hunt wild boar and other large game animals. First recognized as a breed in the late 19th century, the Black Forest hound is still a very popular hunting dog in Slovakia, but it is rare in other countries.

The Black Forest hound is a medium-sized hound with a large nose. On average, members of the breed are between 15.5 and 19.5 inches tall and weigh between 33 and 44 pounds. They have long necks, straight backs and tails that are slightly shorter than their bodies. Their heads are rectangular and slightly domed with long muzzles, rounded ears that hang against their cheeks and deep-set, dark, almond-shaped eyes. Black forest hounds have black coats with clear tan markings on their legs. Their coats are short, smooth and dense, and they have dense undercoats.

Personality

Black Forest hounds are vocal and independent. They are highly energetic and make excellent trackers due to their keen sense of direction. These little dogs also make wonderful companions and are good with other dogs and children. Because they tend to be headstrong, however, they require consistent training and do best with experienced dog owners. Although Black Forest hounds are very active and need plenty of exercise, their relatively small size means they can do well in small homes and large apartments as long as their owners provide indoor play and daily walks.
