Banjara Greyhound

Banjara Greyhound

The Banjara greyhound was developed by the largest gypsy group in India. The breed accompanied the gypsies from place to place, working alongside the group as hunters, guards and stock controllers. The dog is very difficult to find outside of India.

Banjara greyhounds are a large breed of dog with an average weight of the breed is 60 pounds. Tall and slender, the breed is well-muscled and sturdy. Banjara greyhounds are typical greyhounds, with a sleek appearance, smallish ears and pointed muzzle.

Personality

The dog is an intelligent one and is an excellent guard dog. Depending on the individual animal, it may or may not get along with other pets in the house. The breed, because of its guarding tendencies can be aggressive in some situations. This should not dissuade you from owning a Banjara, only make you aware that the breed can be very focused on the task at hand and prefers not to be bothered when working. The breed is neither overly affectionate nor concerned with its human companions, preferring to have a job instead of sitting on the couch. If you are looking for a lap dog, this is not the breed for you. Fierce and fast, this breed is better suited to life on a farm or as a working member of the family.
